Inclusive Practice in Education
Summary

All learners, including those with special educational needs (SEN), have the same rights and are of equal worth. Develop your expertise and shape your teaching and learning practices to meet the needs of all your pupils.

As part of this course, you’ll:

  • Explore pedagogical approaches used in mainstream schools and in SEN settings
  • Develop inclusive teaching strategies to address the needs of students from a range of backgrounds and with a variety of abilities and learning styles
  • Recognise the different needs of each child, and champion and value the diversity of the whole classroom
  • Learn how to encourage and support the progress of all your pupils, including those with SEND
  • Engage in joint practice development for inclusion with fellow practitioners, which you’ll then be able to apply to your own educational setting
  • Apply inclusive practices to foster a culture of acceptance, respect and belonging in a professional learning community

Research expertise

You’ll be taught by academic staff who have conducted extensive research in the field of inclusive pedagogy. The course team includes:

  • Tracy Edwards, a lecturer in inclusion and special educational needs with extensive experience in teaching, school leadership and policy development
  • Andrea Oz, an experienced education professional with expertise in dyslexia and literacy difficulties

Learning opportunities

This course will bring you together with students from a range of professional and academic backgrounds, global contexts, and sectors:

  • Schools
  • Charities
  • Adult social care
  • Local authorities

You’ll have the opportunity in your sessions to interact with a range of perspectives on inclusive practice in education. This course is also networked with a range of schools, local authorities, and non-governmental organisations. The teaching is supported by guest lectures which enable engagement with varied expertise.

Through the course assignments, you’ll explore your own role in promoting inclusive practice, for example as an education researcher, school leader, parent, or teacher, and identify next steps for your development. You’ll be supported to apply your learning to your current or future practice. We’ll encourage you to consider ways in which you might further shape your personal contribution to inclusion and equity in education.
