Water is fundamental to all life – to people, other animals, plants and the overall environment upon which we all depend. Understanding the challenges and issues we encounter with regards to water quantity and water quality is therefore paramount to sustaining both our lives and the world around us. The MSc in Sustainable Water Management is designed to equip you with the skills, knowledge and other key competencies needed to pursue a fulfilling career in the water sector itself or in related sectors where water has a vital role. Complete the MSc in Sustainable Water Management will empower you to make tangible positive impacts to make valuable contributions to the communities around you.

The MSc in Sustainable Water Management is suitable for anyone wishing to pursue a career within the water sector or related sectors, either in the UK or other parts of the world. Whilst the majority of our MSc students have undergraduate degrees in environmental sciences, geography, ecology, or civil engineering, we also welcome those with degrees in other relevant areas and those who have relevant work experience in hydrology or water management.

 

Our programme is unique in that it is taught jointly by university academics and professionals from established environmental companies, including JBA Consulting and the Environment Agency. Experts from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), which has one of its major research facilities based at Lancaster, also contribute to the programme. This extensive range of expertise and connections provides you with valuable real-world insights, opening doors to future career opportunities.

 

You will also:
 

  • Develop the key competencies needed in the water sector, helping you to excel and stand out in areas such as sustainable water management, flood forecasting, and hydrology.
  • Gain practical fieldwork experience through our specialist modules, ensuring you are well-equipped to meet industry needs and undertake a variety of roles.
     
  • Gain the experience and credits necessary to attain Chartership with the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).
     

    Throughout your Master’s, you will complete six modules and a dissertation project. All of the core modules are CIWEM-accredited, ensuring that you are receiving a professionally recognised and high-quality education. Key topics include catchment hydrology, sustainable surface water management, groundwater assessment, flood forecasting, and river restoration, amongst others.
